SOUNDTRACK OF THOUGHTS. VOL. 13

This soundtrack of thoughts doesn’t bring a playlist curated by a certain musical theme or atmosphere. It is made up of recent musical discoveries, which means it is all over the place. I found myself being slightly bored by the current music I listen to. For me, it is easy to get in the loop of the same few albums and musicians that I forget that other music does exist. In those moments, I have my way of discovering something new. Sometimes I go to iTunes and see the latest releases and different playlists. Another way of forcing myself to broaden my library is to play the radio. Recently, I have done so much of that. It is even better if you don’t listen to local radio but go around the globe. Many of the songs on the 13th soundtrack of thoughts are found through Instagram. I am not sure if I like to fool myself, but sometimes I manage to trick my algorithm. When that happens, fresh music comes my way.

First song on the playlist came to me like that. I had a moment of endless scroll and brain rot on Instagram reels. A Vogue Arabia video came up which had “Ayonha” playing in the background by musician Hamid Al Shari. I have no idea what the lyrics are about, but the funky touch to this pop sound is infectious. The truth is I don’t listen to Croatian music often. When I listen to it, Oliver Dragojević usually finds his way to me. “Duša Za Nju” is one of his most magical songs written by Lea Dekleva. It is a simple love ballad on the record Vridilo je full of Oliver’s deep cuts. Another Instagram discovery is “EVERYTHING NEW” by Carly Gibert. She glides effortlessly over the beat. It's best to listen on headphones. That way, you can enjoy the great production.

Sometimes, I give myself tasks in which I miserably fail. Two years ago, I listened only to classical music for a month, and then I checked off items from my “Records I haven’t listened to and I am deeply ashamed of” list. None of that happened for me. Anyway, I gave myself another goal for this spring and that is getting familiar with late 70s funk/R’n’B/disco - but not to much disco - music. Results of that try are Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls" and “Brick House” by The Commodores. The total opposite of this mood is ‘If Only I Could Wait”, a song where Bon Iver and HAIM’s Danielle Haim collaborated. I describe its sound as immersive and hypnotic. You can't listen without closing your eyes.

Last song I am writing about is Senidah’s Puhket. She released two versions - one is without lyrics but something she made up, and the other one has clear words. The first time I heard it, I thought to myself: This sounds like she is in her Madonna Frozen era, which I love.
